The Ladies of Charity is a group of lay Catholic women, founded by St. Vincent de Paul in 1617 to serve the needs of the sick and poor. It is the oldest organization of lay women serving Christ in the world. Since their founding, the Ladies of Charity have adhered to the vision of St. Vincent through daily prayer and personal service to the poor. There are Associations worldwide representing 52 countries with more than 150,000 women.
The first Birmingham Association of the Ladies of Charity was organized in the early 1900s by one of the original Daughters of Charity at St. Vincent’s Hospital. Sister Chrysostom, the first hospital administrator, wanted to expand the ministry of the Daughters to provide aid and relief to Birmingham’s poor and sick, so she established a Ladies of Charity in Birmingham to help the sisters.
Over the years, the Ladies of Charity of Central Alabama have worked alongside the Daughters of Charity to care for the less fortunate in the Birmingham Community. They are a 100% volunteer organization with no paid employees and incorporated as a section 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The current membership of women seeks to serve Christ in two ways: to enrich its members by way of their experiences serving those less fortunate, and to help the needy with their day-to-day life challenges.
